GLP-1 side effects and contraindications
Placeholder clinical summary. GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide and tirzepatide slow gastric emptying and change appetite signaling, which is also why most side effects are digestive. Report anything severe or persistent to your provider before your next dose.
Commonly reported side effects
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, most often in the days after a dose increase
- Constipation, bloating, reflux, or abdominal discomfort
- Reduced appetite, fatigue, headache, or dizziness
- Redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site
- Low blood sugar, especially when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea
Do not start if any apply
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- Pregnancy, active attempts to conceive, or breastfeeding
- Prior serious hypersensitivity reaction to a GLP-1 receptor agonist
- History of pancreatitis, gastroparesis, or active severe gastrointestinal disease
Stop treatment and seek immediate care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, uncontrolled vomiting, signs of an allergic reaction, or sudden vision changes.
Before you start
Tell your provider about every medication, supplement, and condition you have, including diabetes, kidney or liver disease, and any history of eating disorders. Dose changes are gradual for a reason, so follow the titration schedule you are given.
Peptide treatments
Peptide protocols such as sermorelin, GHK-Cu, and glutathione are prescription products used under provider supervision. Evidence varies by peptide, and none of these formulations are FDA-approved for weight loss or anti-aging claims.
Compounded medications
Compounded products are prepared for an individual prescription and are not reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. They are not interchangeable with brand-name products.
Storage and disposal
Follow the storage temperature printed on your label and use an approved sharps container for needles. Never share medication or devices with another person.
Emergencies
This service is not for emergencies. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have severe symptoms.
